Hebrew Grammar Series (Part 9):

Introduction

Welcome to the ninth installment of our Hebrew Grammar Series! In our previous articles, we’ve covered a range of topics including Hebrew verbs, nouns, adjectives, and more. In this article, we’ll be exploring Hebrew prefixes, which play a crucial role in the language. Prefixes are added to the beginning of words to modify their meaning, and in Hebrew, they can change the tense, gender, or number of a word, or even create new words altogether. By understanding Hebrew prefixes, you’ll be able to enhance your understanding of Hebrew sentence structure and become a more fluent speaker.

I. What are Hebrew Prefixes?

A prefix is a word element that is placed at the beginning of a word to modify its meaning. In Hebrew, prefixes are used extensively to modify nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Unlike suffixes, which are added to the end of words, prefixes are added to the beginning of words. Hebrew prefixes are a fundamental part of the language, and understanding them is essential for anyone learning Hebrew.

II. Common Hebrew Prefixes

Here are some of the most common Hebrew prefixes:

  • “heh” ( ה ): The prefix ה is used to indicate the definite article “the.”
For example, הספר (hasefer) means “the book.”
  • “kaf” ( כ ): The prefix כ is used to indicate “like” or “as.”
For example, כמו (kemo) means “like” or “as.”
  • “bet” ( ב ): The prefix ב is used to indicate “in,” “on,” or “at.”
For example, בבית (bebayit) means “in the house.”
  • “mem” ( מ ): The prefix מ is used to indicate “from” or “out of.”
For example, מהבית (mehabayit) means “from the house.”
  • “lamed” ( ל ): The prefix ל is used to indicate “to” or “for.”
For example, לך (lecha) means “to you.”

III. Prefixes that Change the Meaning of Verbs

In Hebrew, prefixes can change the meaning of verbs by indicating tense, person, or mood. For example, the prefix י (yud) is used to indicate the future tense. The verb שפך (shafach) means “to pour out,” while the future tense ישפוך (yishpoch) means “he will pour out.”

Other prefixes that change the meaning of verbs include:

  • “nun” ( נ ): The prefix נ is used to indicate the passive voice.
For example, the verb לימד (limed) means “to teach,”
while the passive form נלמד (nilmad) means “to be taught.”
  • “heh” ( ה ): The prefix ה is used to indicate the causative form.
For example, the verb למד (lamad) means “to learn,”
while the causative form הלמיד (hilmid) means “to teach.”
  • “bet” ( ב ): The prefix ב is used to indicate the reflexive form.
For example, the verb ראה (ra’ah) means “to see,”
while the reflexive form נראה (nir’eh) means “to be seen.”

IV. Prefixes that Modify Nouns and Adjectives

In Hebrew, prefixes can also modify nouns and adjectives to indicate gender, number, or possession. For example, the prefix ה (heh) can indicate the feminine gender of a noun. The noun ספר (sefer) means “book,” while the feminine form הספרה (hasifra) means “the book (feminine).”

Other prefixes that modify nouns and adjectives include:

  • “yud” ( י ): The prefix י is used to indicate possession.
For example, כלב (kelev) means “dog,” while כלבי (klabi) means “my dog.”
  • “tav” ( ת ): The prefix ת is used to indicate the feminine form of adjectives.
For example, the adjective גדול (gadol) means “big,”
while the feminine form גדולה (g’dola) means “big (feminine).”
  • “shin” ( ש ): The prefix ש is used to indicate the plural form of nouns.
For example, ספר (sefer) means “book,”
while the plural form ספרים (s’farim) means “books.”

V. Examples of Prefixes in Action

Let’s take a look at some examples of Hebrew prefixes in action:

  • “nolad” ( נולד ): This verb means “to be born.”
The prefix נ indicates the passive voice,
so the full meaning of this verb is “to be born (passive).”
  • “m’kona” ( מכונה ): This noun means “machine.”
    The prefix מ indicates “from,”
so the full meaning of this word is “a machine (coming) from somewhere.”
  • “Kesef” ( כסוף ): This noun means “money.”
The prefix כ indicates “like” or “as,”
so the full meaning of this word is “money (similar) to something else.”
  • “chatul” ( חתול ): This noun means “cat.”
The prefix ה indicates the definite article “the,”
so the full meaning of this word is “the cat.”

Conclusion

Hebrew prefixes play a crucial role in the language, modifying the meaning of words and creating new words altogether. By understanding Hebrew prefixes, you’ll be able to enhance your understanding of Hebrew sentence structure and become a more fluent speaker. We hope this article has been helpful in deepening your knowledge of Hebrew grammar. Stay tuned for the next installment in our Hebrew Grammar Series!

HATIKVA (THE HOPE)
Israeli National Anthem

The lyrics of "Hatikvah" in Hebrew:

כל עוד בלבב פנימה
נפש יהודי הומייה
ולפאתי מזרח קדימה עין לציון צופיה.

עוד לא אבדה תקוותינו
התקווה בת שנות אלפיים
להיות עם חופשי בארצנו ארץ ציון וירושלים

The Lyrics of "Hatikva" in English:

As long as Jewish spirit,
Yearns deep in the heart,
With eyes turned East,
Looking towards Zion.

Our hope is not yet lost,
The hope of two millennia,
To be a free people in our land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

An English transliteration:

Kol od baleivav penimah
Nefesh yehudi homiyah,
Ulfa’atey mizrah kadimah,
Ayin letsiyon tsofiyah;

Od lo avdah tikvateinu,
Hatikvah bat shenot al payim,
Lihyot am hofshi be’artzeinu,
Eretz tziyon veyerushalayim.
