Preposition “B” (ב): Means “in” or “at”

The first Hebrew preposition we will discuss is “B” (ב), which is used to indicate “in” or “at” normally, but—depending on the circumstances—it can also mean “upon”, “among”, “within”, “by the means of”, “at the time that”, “like”, and so on. This preposition is often used to indicate the location of an action or event.

Examples:

  • Ani bir” (אני בעיר) – “I am in the city
  • Hee bbayit” (היא בבית) – “She is at home
  • Ani bseder” (אני בסדר) – “I am in order(i.e., “I’m fine.”)

Practice Drill:
Let’s translate the following sentences into Hebrew:

  • I am at the park” – “Ani b‘park” (אני בפארק)
  • He is in the office” – “Hu bofis” (הוא באופיס)
  • They are at the beach” – “Hem byam” (הם בים)
